If you open the cage door, it immediately becomes hostile and attacks. If you're low-level enough for the cat to be a threat to anyone there, don't miss the fun.
The Sabre Cat cage can be opened from the top. The cage next to the pit has doors on both sides and a ramp leads down into the pit. As for the Rocky reference, quite possibly that's the case. I assume it's a reference to their intoxication. The marauder in the pit at the end of this dungeon, tends to yell 'Hit the one in the middle'.
